Hi, a friend gave me her old all cotton futon. Her kids used to sleep on it and from the smell I guess they urinated on it. Do I have to throu it away or is there a remedy? The mattress is quite thick, about 20cm and very fluffy. I also want to know if I can take it apart, wash the cotton with the hand in detergent water, let it dry and stuff the cover again or is that going to be very stupid? Please help, I like the futon very very much and do not want to get rid of it... Elma

All cotton mattresses are very affordable. I would recommend buying a new one. Cotton absorbs moisture and the is no way that I know of to get rid of it.

Hi XElmaX:

This a classic question. The best idea for this problem is protection before it happens. Use a mattress pad and/or a vinyl sheet between the futon mattress and the fitted/bottom sheet. This should help solve any future problems with kids, dogs, and the occaisional coffee or iced tea stain.

You could clean the mattress with some rug cleaner and get a plain futon cover and try that. If you are in a dry climate and can hang the mattress outside in the sun, try using some warm water with laundry deteregnt in it and a scrub brush to clean the spots, or the whole mattress. If you don't get it too wet it will dry out nicely in a dayor so of warm sunlight.

If you can stand the aroma use some kind of sweet smelling masking solution (Simple Solution works well) to replace the doggy odor.

Also, this question is quite common and has been answered many times in past posts.

I hope this helps.
