State Farm "Getting Married" Ad Denigrates Futon Furniture

During a recent television ad for State Farm Insurance a young bride says to her handsome groom (after he talks to the television audience about sharing furniture), "Not your stinky futon."

Tragic commentary indeed.

This ad speaks to everything that is wrong with the once thriving category and should be a call to arms for manufacturers who make the quality products that remain on the market today.

"This is why we so desperately need a very targeted PR campaign for the industry," said Joe Tatulli, multiple time Board Member for the industry trade association, and former publisher of Futon Life an industry trade magazine.

"To take back market share from the inferior products that these ads talk about we need a new and unified message of quality, style, comfort and value that resonates with retailers looking for answers in a flat market."

"Flexible, versatile futon furniture still offer consumers all the style and comfort of a true dual purpose sofa sleeper with none of the hassles and discomfort of many more traditional products," Tatulli said.

Tatulli is President of Read Tatulli & Purdy, Inc., a Providence, RI Ad and PR agency currently working with a coalition of futon furniture manufacturers to back a PR initiative for the category.
