FAI's Futon Marketing Council Conducts Consumer Survey

Just weeks ago a consumer survey, conducted by FAI's Futon Marketing Council, and Association PR firm Shandwick, USA, established a benchmark for current consumer awareness of the futon furniture category.

"We are very pleased to report," said Association President David Buechner, "that sixty-two percent of our sample are familiar with futon furniture as a category in the home furnishings industry."

The survey, which polled one thousand random consumers over the age of eighteen, was conducted to discover the consumer's level of awareness and satisfaction with the basic futon sofa-bed.

"A vast majority of our sample, over eighty-three percent, who own or have owned this product, said they were satisfied with their futon furniture," said Joe Tatulli, chairman of the Futon Marketing Council, who coordinates the Association's PR program under the direction of the FAI Board of Directors.

An overview of the survey results will be made available to all FAI members as soon as they are complete, and the complete results of the survey, including all the raw data, will be available upon request to FAI members at a cost of $10.00 each from the Association's office in Chico, CA.

For more information contact David Buechner (770-270-1177, e-mail DLBATL@aol.com) or Joe Tatulli (401-351-0787, e-mail jtatulli@rtppub.com).

FAI and SSA Announce New Trade Show Agreement

After much debate and intense negotiating a very strong two year agreement was hammered out between the Futon Association International and the Specialty Sleep Association. This agreement will allow SSA members to exhibit at the Futon Expo and still maintain the integrity of their separate Association.

"Our Association will maintain control of the management and operations aspects of the Expo," said David Buechner, FAI President. The agreement carries through to the year 2000 Futon Expo in Orlando.

"This decision has taken both Associations into uncharted waters and we are very excited about the possibilities it will afford all of us," Buechner added.

"We are very excited about this agreement," said SSA trade show chair Carla Williams, who spearheaded the SSA negotiating team. "We are very confident that both trade groups will benefit from the economic and logistical advantages this single show will afford," Williams said.

Both group's leaderships asked for the full support of all their respective members as they continue to move forward and iron out the finer points of the arrangement.

ISPA to Study Feasibility of Flammability Standard

The Board of Trustees of the International Sleep Products Association (ISPA) has unanimously decided to begin work with the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) to study the feasibility of modifying existing mattress flammability standards to address the risk of open-flame ignition.

"Our goal is to respond to consumer needs and improve product safety," says Tony Wolf, ISPA president. He adds, "With the adoption of the 1972 flammability standard, we've successfully reduced mattress fires caused by cigarettes. Through this feasibility study, we can find out if and how modifying the existing standard can help to reduce open-flame ignition of mattresses."

In 1972, when the CPSC established its flammability standard for mattresses used in residential settings, it focused only on cigarette-ignited fires. Since that time, various government agencies and private groups have raised additional concerns about mattress fires caused by open-flame ignition. A recent study, funded by the industry, with the National Association of State Fire Marshals, as well as a separate study conducted by the CPSC, show that although the number of deaths and injuries resulting from cigarette ignitions has decreased since the cigarette-ignition standard was established, the risk of mattress fires caused by children playing with matches, lighters or candles in the bedroom.

Wolf commented, "By continuing to educate parents and children about the tragic consequences of bedroom fires, we hope to reduce their incidence by preventing open flames from ever coming into contact with the mattress." As in past years, the SPSC is implementing a consumer education program that underscores keeping matches and lighters away from children and practicing fire-safety precautions in the bedroom. The program will be implemented through outreach to the popular press.

Spring Green, WI - Omni Softgoods recently unveiled their new logo, the culmination of months of work revamping the product line and company focus. "For 14 years we've concentrated on futon products," said Robin Reid, company President. "In the last year especially, our retailers have asked for a broader range of home fashion products including bedtops and window treatments. Our company has refocused to support those needs, increasing emphasis on custom work and bedroom and bath product, while keeping our strong commitment to futons. Our logo is the icing on the cake."

Cotton Works Moves Into New Pillow Line and Additional Fabrics

Albany, GA - Jim Martin, President of Georgia-based Cotton Works, Inc., is ready for some pillow talk...about his company's new line of corded tapestry pillows.

The pillows, introduced in February, are available in any of Cotton Works fine, upholstery-grade tapestry fabrics. They feature luxurious moire backing and cording around all sides. The company also continues to offer pillows in its other fabric lines.

"The availability of the pillows is in keeping with our normal three-day shipping program at Cotton Works." Martin said. "And Cotton Works is a futon industry leader when it comes to quickly turning around orders."

Along with the new pillow line, Cotton Works introduced 50 new futon covers in January - and is set to add 10 more new fabrics by the end of April.

"The new futon covers are doing real well," Martin said. "And the other new ones we're set to add have been requested by our customers, so we expect a good response to them, as well."

The husband-and-wife team of Jim and Lynn Martin founded Cotton Works, Inc. in 1989, with an emphasis on service, including the futon industry's only shipping program with a three-day guarantee.

"We'll be at the High Point show in late April and the futon show in New Orleans coming up at the end of May." Martin said. In High Point, look for Cotton Works at Center Theater Tower, Suite 100 in New Orleans. Cotton Works will staff Booth 512. Burlington, VT - Burlington Futon Company has added twelve new fabrics to their collection, and all are now available.

Introduced at the San Francisco Design and Furnishings Show in January, the new fabrics are generating an enthusiastic response. The fabrics feature bright, fun, European coloring, including vibrant yellows, blues and greens. With names like Malibu, Antigua and Calypso, these fabrics are just in time for summer.

Of particular interest was Eclipse, a regal blue chenille featuring a sun/moon pattern with a rich soft touch. Most of the new selections are featured in the lower price categories.

The company will be introducing new fabrics several times a year to stay current with new trends.

With a greater selection and broader range of price points, Burlington Futon Company expects to appeal to a larger audience, responding to customers' needs and budgets.

The company's easy to use retail price list has been updated. Every standard size and its retail price for the entire collection is listed on one laminated sheet. The retail price list is built with the standard 2.2 markup but can be adjusted to individual preference. It has been well utilized by retailers since it was first provided last summer, and is seen by many as an invaluable sales tool.

August Lotz intros "convertible sofa sleepers"

August Lotz is pleased to announce that their new high-end frame and arm styles are now entering the first phases of production. "Completion of this product line is scheduled for early May - coinciding with our showing at the Futon Expo in New Orleans, LA in booth #423," said Mark Schlichter, company President. The units will have "invisible" hardware and will no longer be called "futons". Instead, they will be marketed as "Convertible Sofa Sleepers" in order to separate them from the rest of the "futon" line. The company feels that diversity within their frame line will prove to be a strong suit when it comes to gaining placement on showroom floors.

August Lotz has also recently unveiled their new bedroom collection. "The factory's production line for these casegoods is up and running to fill orders already placed for the groups," said co-owner Mark Barton. Each group consists of a seven drawer dresser, tri-fold mirror, and five drawer chest designed to complement the already existing platform beds and night stands. Orders may be placed for individual pieces or complete suites. The new bedroom collection can be seen first hand at space #218 of the Center Point Building in High Point, NC or booth #423 at the Futon Expo in New Orleans, LA.

Another High Point attraction in space #218 is August Lotz' newly formed alliance with a leader in the cover industry - Cotton Belle - thus offering customers one of the most "complete" futon packages on the market today. Cotton Belle is one of the most versatile cover manufacturers - supplying customers with a broad array of colors, textures, and styles encompassing all price ranges. The companies are unified not only by a commitment to quality products, but also by a commitment to innovation rather than duplication.

It's New and It's At Home

At Home Furnishings will introduce, at the Futon Expo, its new line of well finished and packaged hardwood beds and accessories for the bedroom. There are four models, designed to retail from $299 to $450, and the margins will be excellent. "This has been a productive area for numerous speciality home furnishings businesses and is well worth looking into. At Home is offering its new pieces in three finishes, " said Sig Gordon, At Home President.

In addition, upgrades to At Home's extensive line of futon frames have resulted in frame bodies with significantly thicker rails and greater support for all parts. Servicing futon furniture after it leaves the store could become a faintly remembered task in a matter of months.

For those retailers who can turn at least 125 frames in three months, using several arm styles, At Home invites inquiries about its container program. The process is easy, efficient, and very profitable. The company backs up container direct-to-buyer shipments with domestic warehouse inventory, so that retailers, needs can be satisfied quickly. The full product line can be seen at the New Orleans Futon Expo, booth #443.

Gold Bond's New 'Comfort Coil' futon is Priced For High Volume

Gold Bond is introducing the futon industry's newest innerspring futon innovation, the Comfort Coil TM mattress, to buyers at the High Point market in April and to futon specialists at the Futon Expo in New Orleans the following month.

The new innerspring has been in development and testing since 1996. The breakthrough construction is engineered to provide a plush sofa-like feel, to readily fold from bed to sofa positions, to eliminate "bottoming out", and to compete at sharp price points, Gold Bond President Robert J. Naboicheck reports.

Each Comfort Coil futon features two rows of heavy-duty Super Center coils in the futon's Fold Zone. These 14 gauge coils feature "breakaway" barrels that enable users to to easily fold and unfold the mattress.

Fourteen rows of 13 gauge support coils provide proper seat and sleeping support. Another exclusive feature of the new innerspring is a helical designed lacing system to ease folding and unfolding the mattress, as well.

"This is a proud addition to the Gold Bond product line," Mr. Naboicheck said. "Like its 'big brother' the Cotton Coil innerspring futon, this mattress is soft and comfortable. There are six layers of the finest cotton in the world around this spring unit, as well as four layers of the industry's best and densest foam. The Comfort Coil will retail from $179 to $199. Leading retailers are doing an extraordinary job with the step-up product now."

New Survey Shows Younger Consumers Buy More Often, But are Less Satisfied Than Their Older Peers

Windsor, CT - Younger consumers buy furniture more frequently than their elders, but are less satisfied with their store experience and less likely to return, according to a new consumer survey by ADVO, Inc. The survey found that 63 percent of consumers aged 18-34 buy furniture every three years or less, compared to 53 percent of those aged 35-54, and only 33 percent of consumers aged 55 and over. At the same time, only 67 percent of consumers in the 18-34 category were satisfied with the salesperson who sold them their furniture, compared to 80 percent of consumers aged 35 and over. And, only 62 percent of 18-34 year-olds plan to return to the store where they made their purchase, compared to 75 percent in the 35 and over age group.

"Our new study shows that younger consumers are a highly attractive group whose needs are apparently being overlooked by many furniture retailers," said Sheila McCusker, ADVO's Director of Strategic Business Planning. "These consumers are more likely to be repeat furniture buyers and to have a high lifetime customer value. Thus, they should be a key target market. Our findings suggest, however, that furniture retailers are not doing enough to satisfy and retain younger consumers."

ADVO's findings also showed that younger consumers are more price sensitive than their older counterparts. In the 18-34 age group, 58 percent cited "best price" as a key factor in selecting a store, versus only 45 percent of the 55-plus age group. Among these younger consumers, 47 percent listed "low price" as a primary reason for making a purchase, compared to 31 percent in the 35-54 age group and only 20 percent of those 55 and older.

The company can be visited at its Web site at www.advo.com

LofaBed sleeper Goes Supersize

Just when we were getting used to the idea of a 50 inch futon with permanently attached, buttoned-on covers, the makers of the davenport/futon combination called the LofaBed, have come out with a bigger model that accommodates a standard sized futon with removable covers!

"That's the beauty of working with small, Canadian factories," said Mitch Wapen of Lofa Sales. "They listen to their customers, and what our futon customers are saying is that people want a full, 54-inch futon with the option of choosing a cover to match the base." The LofaBed was originally targeted to go head-to-head against other sofa beds in a department or furniture store environment. "But," says Wapen, "futon retailers didn't like the smaller mattress and upholstered look that is perfectly acceptable to furniture dealers. So, we bumped the size by four inches and offered the davenport base as a separate item, and WOW, did sales take off!"

Wapen feels furniture dealers are likely to stock the LofaBed in only one fabric combination and then custom order everything else, whereas a futon dealer views the Super LofaBed as a new upholstered frame category to go alongside his metal, pine, and hardwood models. "This is fine by me," claims Wapen. "Whether I sell a complete set or the davenport base alone, I'm happy for the business. And, of course, shipping costs are a lot less when you're buying only half the product."

For more information on the new Super LofaBed, call Mitch Wapen at (514) 424-1431 or fax him at (514) 424-0267.
