Eco-Friendly Consumerism Moves from Dining Room to Bedroom
You watch what you eat–now watch where you sleep. A national trend toward more health-conscious consumption of food products has been reported, and sales of organic food products have increased. It is clear that consumers are making food choices that are not only better for their health, but also for the earth. According to a recent study by the Natural Marketing Institute, the changing demographics of consumers are driving eco-friendly purchase decisions. But earth-conscious consumption is not limited to the dining room–in fact, the next wave in green consumerism may be the bedroom.
This is a wave that White Lotus Home, a New Jersey-based manufacturer of handcrafted all-natural fiber futon mattresses, has already been riding for a quarter century. On Earth Day 2006, White Lotus Home celebrated its 25th year in business. Or as they prefer to look at it, their 25th year of helping save the earth. Otis manufactured all natural products with no added preservatives. Mattresses used cotton, horse hair, wool and even feathers for comfort layers. Steel was used as a foundation component because it was strong, durable and wouldn’t be placed in land dumps. On the Institutional Market level, we created planet-friendly “extended life” programs to renovate mattresses for hospitals and nursing homes.
